The Heart Beat – Dear Diary

Diary Entry – Autumn 1977

Whatever this “gift” is, I hate it. It scares me.

Dear Diary,

So last night was super freaky. My friend Julie and I were just driving around in my car, listening to music, when we started hearing this weird noise coming from the trunk. It sounded like “boom boom, boom boom.” At first, I thought maybe something rolling around in the trunk, but it was too rhythmic, almost like a heartbeat.

I looked at Julie, and she had the same scared look on her face that I did. My stomach dropped because it reminded me of all the heart attacks Dad’s had. Dad has suffered from heart attacks ever since I was born. It really freaked me out, so I asked Julie if she could spend the night.

We stayed up talking for a while, but I was still on edge. Then, at around 3 a.m., we suddenly heard voices coming from the hallway. It wasn’t normal talking, though—it was over the CB radio, and I knew right away it was the ambulance crew. I peeked out my door, and sure enough, they were getting ready to put Dad on the gurney. He was having another heart attack.

I’m still so shaken. How could I have known something was wrong earlier? I’ve never really believed in this kind of thing, but after last night, I don’t know. Whatever this “gift” is, I hate it. It scares me.

I wish I was making this up diary, these coincidences haunt me,

Kay xo
